Small Cells – Acquisition, Design & Installation
Mobile is becoming a vital part of consumer’s lives, with smartphone ownership at 39% and the average USA household now owning three different enabled devices. There is also an increasing trend towards migrations online and from fixed to mobile. All of this leads to a massive demand for mobile network capacity.
In order to cater for this demand, Networks must continue to evolve; urban backhaul will need radical new solutions. Small cells are the only practical solution to the predicted demand as they deliver capacity and supplement coverage, and complement existing networks.
The advantage of small cells implementation is their speed to market and reduced cost of delivery. Deployment needs to be flexible, using existing structures and power supplies, whilst also having an unobtrusive design. It is given that they will be installed closer to the users, near street level, on streetside furniture, for example lampposts and bus shelters.
Main tasks performed by Juan’s Telecom in the deployment of small cells as follows;
- Acquisition of the site location, negotiating with the landlord and/or their tenant
- Obtain planning (permitting) consent for installation where required
- Site survey and production of Design drawings
- Build, Installation and Commissioning

3G in Rural Areas
Mobile phone coverage is still a real problem in many rural areas as highlighted recently by the Liberal Democrat Minister David Heath, who described mobile coverage and broadband as essential for our economic future and not an optional extra for people in rural areas.
Juan’s Telecom have just completed the acquisition and planning trial for twelve 3G metro-cell coverage sites in rural villages. The villages previously had no phone signal at all, referred to as ‘not spots’ so these sites will make a real difference!
